PYP-2 students are creating a timeline of their lives using Microsoft Photo Story 3.

The students will be asked to perform the following tasks when creating their project:

Import pictures - parents are placing photos in DropBox and students will access from Kathy's Public Drive
Add text to pictures - a short caption of 1-3 words
Format position of text and change text color, if necessary
Narration - record their voice on each picture using their autobiography as a guide
Transitions - if time, students can change the default transitions
Add Music

The students in PYP-3 have started a new unit on cities. They are inquiring into:

• The different parts of a city
• What makes a city work

As part of their inquiries, they are using SimCity 4, a city-building simulation game to design and build a city. A free online version of the game is available here.

PYP-3 logged on to their new e-Portfolios using the website Digication. They learned how to navigate and edit their own site and updated some of their personal information.

Brains and Technology

How does your brain react in a digital world? PYP-5 watched a video about student use of technology and how it might overload their brains. Harvard researchers are studying whether or not the use of media is changing the pattern of activity of the brain and decreasing memory.

They also took some tests from Stanford University measuring their ability to filter out distractions and juggle tasks. They downloaded Webpage Screenshot from Google and then took a screen shot of their results for later discussion.

Picnik Photo Editor

Students used the website Picnik , which is an easy to use online photo editor, to manipulate a photo taken in art class. Picnik has the ability to change effects, fonts, shapes and frames on your photos for presentations and fun.

Google Docs is an easy-to-use online word processor, spreadsheet and presentation editor that enables you to create, store and share instantly and securely, and collaborate online in real time. You can create new documents or upload existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There's no software to download, and all your work is stored safely online and can be accessed from any computer.

Student Gmail Accounts

The PYP-3 and new students from PYP-5 have been busy signing in to their CISstudent.dk accounts.

In the PYP3-5 classes, students have the opportunity to use a cisstudent.dk account, specifically to be used as a tool in the classroom, in connection with their school work. Most students already have at least one e-mail address, so the CISstudent.dk account is only for school purposes (i.e. not forwarding jokes or signing up for various game websites etc).

Besides using email for "traditional" email purposes (sending messages), the students use the digital toolbox which Google Apps provides. The students will learn how to use e-mail, Google Docs (word processing, spreadsheet and presentation tools,) Google Sites and Google Calendar. They will also learn about "good practice" in internet use - personal safety, netiquette, and digital citizenship. The accounts are to be treated as virtual classroom spaces – classroom rules apply also when using these tools (including the language the students use.) All of the students agreed to the school's Acceptable Use Policy before opening their accounts.

I would like to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year here at Copenhagen International School. We have planned some exciting activities in ICT for all of the grade levels. The students will be issued their own personal usernames and passwords for the school's student computer network. These usernames and passwords will then be used to establish Gmail accounts for PYP3-PYP5. I will be giving more information about those accounts at a later date. All students will be asked to sign the school's Acceptable Use Policy. The AUP asks students to behave responsibly while using the school computer, network and e-mail.

PYP-3 is creating a classroom Wiki for their new unit, Biomes.

In ICT, each biome group is using the CIS Program of Inquiry Netvibes website to gather information and images about the plants, animals and location of their assigned biome.

They are going to use their research and images to make a short film (less than 1 minute) about their biome using Microsoft Moviemaker which will eventually be uploaded to the Wiki.

Instructions:

Gather 8-12 photos of your biome
Photos should be saved in Kathy's public file (@KatherineSublett, PYP3, Unit 6, name of your biome)
Each film should have images of plants, animals and locations from the biome
Each image should have a caption so it is best to name the image the same title as your caption when saving
Each film should have a title page with the title of the biome and the members of the group
Each film should have at least one slide with some key information about the biome
Each film should have music that can be found in Kathy's public file
